Partnering with You and Your Child

I work with neurodiverse children and their families to guide and support their journey through the special education system.

Services

Introductory Consultation

Let's talk! I want to learn about your family, hear about your journey, and understand the kind of support you are seeking. The special education system is complex, and for most families, the journey is long. Let's find out how I can help you and your child. I provide one-on-one tutoring and executive function coaching for young people with learning disabilities (students from elementary school through college), and advocacy and consulting for parents working to get appropriate support services for their children. A conversation will help us determine how my services can help, or whether I can make a referral.

Hourly Consultations

I work with parents to help interpret neuropsychiatric evaluations, understand IEPs, advocate for services, recommend school placements, and make referrals to additional services that support students in their educational journey. I help parents support their children's learning, including making recommendations for homework help and diffusing homework battles.

Tutoring and Coaching

I specialize in working one-on-one with students, elementary age through university students, to review the student's academic record and help define achievable goals. I support students to develop the habits needed to be successful in school, including executive function skills such as time management, study skills such as test preparation, and self-advocacy skills. I am also trained in the Orton-Gillingham method of reading instruction and experienced at helping struggling readers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please contact us if you cannot find an answer to your question.

A special educational consultant works with families and students with special educational needs to help them navigate the education system. The system can be complex and obfuscating. I help  families understanding their student's needs, the supports to which they are entitled, and the process for accessing support from schools.

In addition to helping parents and families understand the systems of diagnosis, placement, and educational progress, I work with students as a tutor and coach. I provide students with academic help, executive function coaching, and psycho-education, which helps them better understand their unique learning profiles. I want all students to gain independence and confidence as learners, and help them get their through direct instruction and compassionate coaching.

The term "executive function" refers to a suite of skills controlled by the brain's prefrontal cortex. They are skills that we use for planning, managing, and following through with complex plans. These are skills that are very important in schooling, and become more necessary the further we advance in school. In secondary and post-secondary school environments, student have to manage multiple demands, different subjects, and different professionals. Students build these skills throughout childhood, but students with learning differences may need extra support to develop them. An executive function coach can help by providing explicit instruction in time management, task initiation, project planning, and by building students' understanding of their learning differences (psychoeducation).

Our services do not include diagnosis, as we have neither psychologists nor medical doctors on staff. I help families identify when they might need these assessments and help families understand the resulting reports. Similarly, I refer families to special education attorneys who can help access needed services when school districts fail to meet their obligations to education and support all students.
